A dark statue that can be investigated during exploration in Elderfield

The distinction that matters most: in this game a Mystery is specifically an interactable world object that offers the investigate further? prompt — an odd statue, a glowing counter, a haunted ATM. News events shown on your TV are not mysteries. The developer confirmed this directly on the Steam forum in April 2025, and it decides whether Akira’s investigation task can be finished at all.

How investigating works

Every investigation triggers a die roll, and the outcome is shifted by your Luck stat. Mysteries are one of the few roll events that can produce a hidden 0 or 7: the 0 end is usually the worst outcome (stat loss, combat, or death), the 7 end the best (rare items or a stack of blessings). The result is not fixed per object — investigating the same spot again can branch differently.

Outcomes fall into three broad groups: gold and items, blessings or curses with health loss, or immediate combat. The mall’s Dark Counter puts you against one Shopper and one Globule on a low roll, and the Corpse Tree in the Old Woods asks riddles where one wrong answer permanently lowers your maximum agility.

Bathing is the reset button

One bath respawns every mystery in the world, monsters included. That has two direct consequences: the same mystery can be farmed repeatedly, and you cannot treat bathing as a pure heal, because it re-arms ground you had already cleared. Once a week a bath also refreshes forage and mine nodes, so schedule gathering days with that in mind.

Confirmed mystery locations

These are confirmed by the Steam forum answer thread and the community wiki’s outcome table, and they are enough to satisfy the early investigation tasks:

AreaMysteryNotes
Mall food courtGoo pile (Fleshy Mass)Can cough up glowing rewards, or permanently cost 1 Max HP
Mall, Sports PlanetDark CounterLow rolls start a fight with one Shopper and one Globule
Mall hallwayATMConfirmed to grant a blessing and gold; 35 and 50 have both been reported
Mall, empty storeArcade GameHigh rolls grant blessings and can hand over an item
SewersOne mysteryInteractable object inside the sewers
Dave’s houseAncient CoinRefusing greed (a high roll) restores HP and adds 50 gold
Tree below the sports storeTree mysteryStand on the plank by the hole and interact to the left

The Old Woods and Catacombs hold many more — the well, the corpse tree, the bleeding trees, the hole, the tent, the strange plant and others — enough for later tasks. Some outcome cells are still unconfirmed, so this page only lists what is written down.

How tasks use mysteries

TaskRequirementReward
Time to Investigate (Akira)Investigate 1 / 3 / 5 / 7 mysteries in orderFour stages, ending with the Staff of Insight
Secrets of the Catacombs (Bill)Investigate 3 / 6 mysteriesSmall Hammer
Hidden Shrines (Jenna)Find 2 God Shrines in the Catacombs“Something to stay safe”

What is still unconfirmed

The community outcome table still has many cells that only read “Result”, meaning the reward is unconfirmed, and the game never states whether a one-time reward also resets when you bathe. Do not guess at either: this page treats only written-down branches as fact, and if you hit a blank cell, record what you actually saw instead of copying an unsourced table.

What the developer and players say

This is the mechanic where the developer and the community had to sort it out together:

  • The developer stepped in. In an April 2025 Steam thread, a player could not find the seventh mystery. Developer chris-cote replied: “The news events are not mysteries. There are more than 6 mysteries around the map (at least 7 in the demo). The only things that count as mysteries are the objects in the world that say ‘investigate further?’.”
  • A player pinned the seventh. In the same thread, BlackxWave gave the location: “The last one you’re missing is the Tree one, it’s under the sports store, stand on plank near the hole and interact to the left.”
  • A community round-up warns against copying tables. One fan site states plainly that the full location table, exact roll probabilities and one-time reward flags have not reached a confirmable standard, and that blank cells must not be filled in by pattern guessing.

The above is a developer reply and player testing; a single community source is not enough on its own for a key conclusion.
