Welcome to Elderfield Characters: The Nine Villagers
Welcome to Elderfield characters: where the nine villagers Tanner, Sam, Ellie, Edwin, Josh, Molly, Alice, Blorph and Celeste live, plus side characters.
Welcome to Elderfield has nine main characters. They are not decorative: four hearts unlocks a school adventure, ten hearts unlocks a proposal, and letters, gifts and friendship events are tracked per person. So learning who is who — and where they live — is the point of this list.
The nine main characters
| Character | Home / usual location | Who they are |
|---|---|---|
| Tanner | Cabin on the right at the Old Woods entrance | Appears between the north-west and the Old Woods, tied to The Local Jogger’s Club |
| Sam | Apartment 1, first floor, Greystone Estates | Talks to you around town and mentions school |
| Ellie | Dilapidated house right of the bus stop, north-west town | Lives in a house with boarded windows; may ask to borrow money in the General Store |
| Edwin | House with the lit porch light, left of the bus stop, north-west town | Asks the four sacred numbers of the Dark One; says he put his skin back on to get hired |
| Josh | Lower unit of the duplex in Town (West) | Shares the duplex with Alice; spends time around the Art Gallery |
| Molly | The Workshop on the path towards the farm | Gives you your first Rusty Pickaxe and opens the Workshop and Crafting |
| Alice | Other unit of the same duplex in Town (West) | Shares with Josh; hands out Treasure Maps and appears at the farmhouse |
| Blorph | Sewers behind the police station, north-east town | A non-human sewer resident, and one of the marriageable characters |
| Celeste | The Library in the north-west | Bound to the Library, occasionally outside during the Season of the Dead |
When it is raining or snowing most characters stay home; Sunday is the holy day for switching allegiance between the Old Gods, which shifts town activity too.
Friendship milestones and school adventures
The relationship meter is ten hearts, twenty friendship points each. Crossing a threshold unlocks letters and invitations:
| Hearts | Unlocks |
|---|---|
| 3 (60 points) | First tier of friendship letters and gifts |
| 4 (80 points) | School adventure invitation for that group |
| 5 (100 points) | Second tier of friendship letters and gifts |
| 8 (160 points) | Highest tier of friendship letters and gifts |
| 10 (200 points) | Proposal with a Ring of Binding |
School adventures are grouped, and any one member of a group at four hearts earns the invitation: Josh / Sam / Alice reward the Cube of One +7; Edwin / Ellie / Blorph reward the Earring of Duality +5; Molly / Tanner / Celeste reward the Crystal Skull +10. The invitation always comes from a fixed character, but the closing conversation depends on relative friendship — the equipment reward is the same across all three endings.
Important side characters
Beyond the nine there is a second tier of people who hand out tasks or services: Farmer Hans (the giant skeleton farmer at the centre of the early game), Klaus, Henrietta, Father Desmond (church, officiates weddings), The Tax Man (periodic tax demands, curses you if you fail), The Travelling Merchant, Akira (posts the investigate-mysteries task) and Mayor. Several of them currently have only a name and an image on the community wiki, so this page does not invent identities for them.
Finding people
Start from the homes in the table above, then use the in-game schedule: most characters move between morning, afternoon and evening slots across the week, and weather decides whether they go out at all. When someone is missing, wait at their bound location — Celeste is essentially always in the Library, Akira is fixed to the apartment building, and Molly rarely leaves the Workshop.
To take a relationship further, read romance and marriage; to work through everyone, pair this list with the gift preferences.
What reviewers and players say
Critical opinion on this cast is split, and it is worth knowing before you invest time:
- The imagery lands hard. One review puts it simply: “Your neighbor Dave is a cat. Nobody appears particularly interested in explaining this.” Edwin’s line about putting his skin back on because nobody would employ a skeleton is quoted by several outlets as one of the game’s best.
- But the people barely develop. RPGFan’s review says, “All of the main human romance options are uniformly uninteresting partners at the beginning and do not evolve at all as you ‘get to know them’”, and criticises the game for having no non-white human NPCs.
- Gazettely is more specific: “Completing tasks connected to characters often produces no relationship gain and little later acknowledgement.”
- ScreenHype, by contrast, lists “unusual and memorable characters” among its pros.
In other words: these characters have real flavour, but do not expect the fine-grained arcs of Stardew Valley. All of the above is press opinion.
