Welcome to Elderfield Romance: Marriage and the Ring
Welcome to Elderfield romance: nine marriageable characters, ten hearts, the Jeweler's Desk and Ring of Binding recipes, and the proposal rules.

You can romance and marry. The nine marriageable characters are Alice, Josh, Sam, Ellie, Edwin, Tanner, Molly, Blorph and Celeste. The bar is ten hearts, or 200 friendship points, and you cannot already be married. The whole path reduces to one sentence: fill the meter to ten hearts, craft a Ring of Binding, and hand it over through the gift option.
How the meter fills
The relationship bar is ten hearts of twenty points each, with half-heart steps between them. The game does not give every villager a separate scene at two, four, six and eight hearts; instead friendship unlocks letters plus three shared school adventures:
| Hearts | Unlocks |
|---|---|
| 3 (60 points) | First tier of friendship letters and gifts |
| 4 (80 points) | School adventure invitation for that group |
| 5 (100 points) | Second tier of friendship letters and gifts |
| 8 (160 points) | Highest tier of friendship letters and gifts |
| 10 (200 points) | Eligible to propose |
Crossing a threshold does not guarantee a letter the next morning — mail arrives with a notification, and you read it from the journal at home. School adventures and marriage are separate: four hearts triggers an invitation, but a proposal does not require finishing that adventure first.
Crafting the ring
Build one Jeweler’s Desk at a workbench first, then craft the ring on it. Both material lists are fixed:
| Jeweler’s Desk (crafted at a Tinker’s Desk) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Hardwood | 25 |
| Spiritwood | 10 |
| Wax | 15 |
| Copper Bar | 10 |
| Iron Bar | 5 |
| Ring of Binding (crafted at the Jeweler’s Desk, 100% success) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Crafting Pattern | 5 |
| Platinum Bar | 5 |
| Void Crystal Bar | 5 |
| Beating Heart | 1 |
| Viscera | 10 |
You know the ring recipe from the start, so you do not need Father Desmond’s letter, The Next Step, to learn it. Stock the materials early so you are not stuck gathering them the moment you hit ten hearts.
Proposing: do not waste the gift
A proposal is simply handing over the Ring of Binding through the gift option. Two details cost players dearly:
- Leave a gift slot free. The game already limits gifts to one per day and two per week, and a proposal counts against both. If you have already gifted that day, you cannot propose.
- With insufficient friendship, or if you are married, the ring comes back — but the attempt still counts, burning that day’s gift and one weekly slot. Check the relationship screen for ten full hearts before you commit.
Wedding and after
An accepted proposal goes straight into the church wedding sequence; there is no separate date to book and no second errand. Father Desmond officiates and you choose I do! to continue. Your spouse does not move in immediately — the move-in takes effect at the next midnight rollover, when their room is added to your home. Married dialogue appears afterwards, and some conversations hand you an item. The school adventures continue to run independently.
What reviewers and players say
- RPGFan’s review calls the social system “an unrewarding chore”, arguing the characters barely change as the meter rises.
- Gazettely puts it more concretely: “You can spend considerable effort learning which present moves a meter while discovering less about the person receiving it.”
- The player-side answer is shared data: one of the most popular threads on the subreddit is a community-made “Gift Guide (All Loved Gifts)” covering every character, which tells you how much trial and error people are trading away.
- The practical conclusion: treating marriage as a completion goal is fine, but if you are here for dialogue and character arcs, lower your expectations or spend your time on combat and exploration instead.
The above is press opinion and player feedback, not official documentation.
