Welcome to Elderfield Guide: Beginner Walkthrough
A Welcome to Elderfield guide for new players: the core loop, bath and sleep rules, both difficulty modes, and the first tasks that unlock something.

Do not try to finish the game on day one. The loop in Welcome to Elderfield is farm → forage and mine → cook and craft → get stronger → fight → unlock new areas. Getting that loop stable is the whole job of your first few days.
Your first three moves. Hand Farmer Hans 1 wheat to unlock the Grinder and Chef Elroy’s recipe shop, then bring Molly one copper ore to get the Rusty Pickaxe and unlock the Workshop, Furnace and Crafting blueprints. Until both are done you have no reliable resource or processing chain, and everything later — corn, pumpkin seeds, deeper areas — hangs off that chain.
Three rules that change every decision
One, a day is roughly 20 real minutes and midnight forces a new day. The rollover always triggers a Moon Event, and the moon type decides what happens to you that night. You cannot pause time by refusing to sleep; unfinished business gets pushed forward by the system.
Two, bathing is your strongest heal and your reset button. A bath refills HP and MP and clears most blessings and curses, but it also respawns every monster and mystery in the world. Once a week a bath additionally refreshes forage and mine nodes. So either bathe when you are done exploring, or accept that the map repopulates.
Three, sleeping is optional but rolls the dice. Sleeping can trigger random Sleep Events, good and bad, and it is a separate system from the midnight Moon Event. Early on, when materials are scarce, do not treat sleep as a free action.
Die rolls are everywhere else too: searching garbage, opening crates, investigating odd objects and even going to bed can each roll a die, and Luck shifts the outcome. Mysteries are one of the few roll events that can produce a hidden 0 or 7.
Choosing a difficulty
There are two experiences. Cozy mode keeps combat punishment very low, which suits players who came for the atmosphere, story, farming and relationships. The harder, Old Gods side cuts healing, stacks curses and raises enemy pressure, and suits players who came for the turn-based depth. Reviewers describe the difference clearly: under Cozy mode blessings and curses read like flavour text you can enjoy and ignore, while at higher difficulty the same systems become real resource pressure. Decide what you are here for before you start.

Early tasks and what they actually give you
| Task | Giver | Key step | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Farmer’s Path | Farmer Hans | Bring 1 Wheat | Grinder + Chef Elroy’s recipe shop |
| The Skull Chalice | Farmer Hans | Craft a Giant Skull Chalice from mine materials | Furnace and its recipes, later Pumpkin Seeds |
| A Fast Food Fiend | Farmer Hans | Beat the monster inside Burgers Burgers in the mall food court | Corn Seeds and several cooking recipes |
| Helping Molly | Molly | Mine 1 Copper Ore with the Rusty Pickaxe | Workshop access, one Furnace, Crafting blueprint |
| The Elder Gem | Molly | Find the Elder Gem in the mall mines | Lapidary Table upgrade blueprint |
| Time to Investigate | Akira | Investigate 1 / 3 / 5 / 7 mysteries | Four stages of rewards, ending with the Staff of Insight |
There is more than one route through the early game, but the rows above are the earliest reliable way to open the resource chain.
Do not brute-force early combat
You start with the Energy Blast ritual. What actually makes the first hours easier are three things: Warp (taught by a shopper in the mall’s Ultra Video store, free travel home), Lesser Mending (25g from the mall vending machine, 20 HP, usable outside battle), and Dark Shield (dropped by the Office Slime in front of the mall F1 door; 3 MP for three turns of +20% defence and magic defence). Finishing Old Man Jackson’s Build-A-Wife task teaches Dark Blast, and Pete the laundry ghost in the apartment basement gives you Ghost Blast.
Supplies matter more than levels. Spend early money on healing and tool upgrades rather than cosmetics.
Common early blockers
- Tentacles stop you tilling. Farm plots have to be cleared before you can plant, and Cleansing Balm is semi-rare. Do not burn it casually.
- Confusing mysteries with TV news. Akira’s investigation task only counts world objects that prompt
investigate further?. News events on the TV do not count. Getting this wrong stalls the quest indefinitely. - The in-game map is inaccurate. Reviewers recorded that the map does not reliably show your position. That is a known issue, not proof that you missed a mechanic.
- Do not rush the deep areas. Major regions are gated behind community groups: you need The Local Jogger’s Club to open the dark woods routes, and the relevant task chains for deeper mine levels.
What reviewers and players say
Press and player experience can save you a few wasted attempts:
- Bathing is a heal and a reset. Gazettely’s review points out that a bath restores health and cleanses curses but respawns monsters, and that the free warp home has the same side effect. Do not treat it as free.
- The bed saves the game without forcing sleep. The same review notes saving and sleeping are separate actions, and that going to bed rolls for an event.
- Religion is a real combat resource. RPGFan’s reviewer says loyalty to one old god, Kaal, opened a door in a mine that only that god’s followers can enter, and inside was a maul that raised attack while lowering spell costs.
- Under Cozy mode, curses are closer to readable flavour text. ScreenHype’s reviewer wandered around at maximum curses and picked up the achievement for five curses in one day — while stressing that this was Cozy mode.
- The map issue is documented. ScreenHype explicitly records that the in-game map cannot accurately show your position, so do not doubt yourself over it.
All of the above is press or player opinion, not official documentation.
